1. Realize the Truth About Big Data T he term "big data" can give the impression that IT organizations face a single, monolithic technical challenge. But "big data" is actually a description of the world in which IT operates, where massive volumes of constantly changing data from a diverse range of sources offer potentially significant business value. The operations that IT has to perform on this data to extract that value, however, are very different from one another. These operations include: • Online transactional processing • Complex investigative analytics • Diagnostic operational analytics They may also include the kind of scalable, distributed data intake-and-store operations commonly performed with MapReduce and Hadoop. 3 SSS UBM Tech January 2014
